Jerkwater Canoe & Kayak

Experience the Colorado River!

WHO WE ARE…

Jerkwater Canoe & Kayak Company has been providing paddling equipment and running river trips on the Colorado River and other western waterways for over 35 years. We are the most experienced and widest-equipped canoe livery west of the Mississippi River and the only full-service canoe and kayak outfitter on the Colorado River.

We are a completely service-oriented company. We enjoy tremendous customer loyalty, and we value our client relationships above everything. Our purpose is to provide the finest available outdoor experience for each of our paddlers. We are happy to provide references. We always have a good time on our river, and we want you to have a good time too.

Jerkwater Canoe & Kayak Company is licensed by the National Park Service to launch canoes and kayaks at the base of Hoover Dam for Black Canyon and by the U.S. Forest Service for lakes in the Williams/Flagstaff area of Arizona. We are official concessionaires of Moabi Regional Park (San Bernardino County Regional Parks), and we belong to both the Professional Paddlesports Association and the Worldwide Outfitters & Guides Association.

WHAT WE DO…

Jerkwater Canoe & Kayak Company offers equipment, guides, paddling trips, mini-vacations and river trip support services on the Colorado River from Hoover Dam in Nevada to Yuma, Arizona. In addition, we offer services on other western rivers and waterways, such as the Owens River in California, the Green River in Utah, and delightful high-country lakes in the Williams/Flagstaff area of Arizona.

Our services range from simply providing rental equipment for your individual or group river trip to deluxe all-inclusive trips that include gourmet meals and accommodations. There are a lot of options in between the two extremes, including campsite barbecues and individually packed picnic lunches, as well as paddling shirts and hats. Since we are easily bored, we are always open to developing new and different kinds and combinations of trips to serve your need. Just ask us.

We provide shuttle and support services to outfitters, individuals and groups. We provide knowledgeable, experienced river and tour guides.

We organize special theme events that are geared to families, special interests and youth recreation.

JERKWATER… WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

People often ask us about our name and how it originated - so here's the straight stuff:

Back in the old days, when steam railroads were the hottest thing going - The innovative method of travel into the West, the train engines had to have access to fresh water all along the route. Many little towns and some larger ones grew up along the route as water towers were constructed and staffed to replenish the steam engines in the least possible amount of time.

Tiny, no-name water stops along the steam rail line - necessarily next to creeks, rivers and other water sources - had no towers (or anything else, for that matter). The trainmen had to get off and carry water to the engine by hand - they were "jerking water". That stop on the line was a "Jerkwater Town" - generally unpopular with trainmen.
